coffee perfection on the atlantic coast of namibia

Swakopmund  is a city and beach resort on the Atlantic coast of western Namibia, and lies approximately 170 miles [280 km] west of Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.  Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namib desert, it is the fourth largest population center in Namibia with approximately 45,000 inhabitants.  It was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South-West Africa.

As it is important for me to find the perfect place to sit and watch the locals [in this case many of whom are German speakers], as I have done before in Namibia I was always on the hunt for that perfect location, preferably with a fantastic cappuccino to accompany the experience.

So it is that I came upon Slowtown Coffee in Swakopmund.  I had first seen the name in a lodge near the Sosussvlei Dunes farther south, and was pleasantly surprised that Slowtown had a coffee shop in this seaside town.

On the corner of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue and Tobias Hainyenko Street, very close to both the Swakopmund Museum, the Swakopmund Post Office and the famous Kristall Galerie, one can find Slowtown Coffee Roasters.  With a huge outdoor space and a relaxing and well-appointed indoor space, Slowtown is exactly what I was looking for.

Sitting in the Swakopmund early afternoon sun I enjoyed a cappuccino, among the best I’ve tasted.  Smooth, great coffee flavor – perfect.  From their official website, their philosophy is as follows, “At Slowtown Coffee Roasters we like the idea of slowing things down to the point where we can focus on what matters, quality, people, and service. We love coffee because it’s so much more than a drink, it’s a conversation, and it’s the essence of stopping and enjoying the moment. That is why we do what we do. Everything at Slowtown is done in the pursuit of a great cup of coffee, whether it be at home, in your favorite coffee shop or somewhere on a remote Lodge, we hope to bring our passion to your cup. Forged out of a dream to supply Namibia with the freshest highest quality coffee bean available we think it’s been a good ride so far and we hope you will join us on the journey and see where it might take us. We are a small dedicated 100% Namibian team and look to give our clients the necessary attention they deserve. Our Roastery in Swakopmund is a chill place where you can grab a take-away cappuccino and your weekly supply of beans or we could let you in to the secrets of making barista style coffee at home with our various coffee making accessories we have to offer in the shop.”
