When most people contemplate air travel, they tend not to take into account the varied options at their disposal for the same flight time. Living in New York City, we are fortunate to have two major international airports at our disposal (Newark and JFK) and one domestic airport (Laguardia), making the flight options much more plentiful. But even for New Yorkers, we tend to forget where it is possible to fly if you only want to be in the air for about five hours.
The entirety of the Caribbean, as well as most parts of the U.S. east of the Rockies, and most areas of Eastern Canada are accessible in less than five hours, but here are a few destinations at your disposal if you want only to max out at five hours in the air.
A flight from NYC to Caracas, Venezuela will take approximately five hours, at which time you can head on to see Angel Falls, the tallest waterfall in the world.
A flight from NYC to San Jose, Costa Rica will take approximately five hours, at which time you can then go and see the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, home to about 2,000 plant species, and Tortuguero National Park, home to both the three-toed sloth and the two-toed sloth.

A flight from NYC to Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago [birthplace of calypso] will take approximately five hours, at which time you can head to a cricket game, the most popular sport in the country.
A flight from Newark to Las Vegas will take approximately five hours, at which time you can go and mourn the recent loss of the Liberace museum.
A flight from NYC to Mexico City will take approximately five hours, at which time you can experience the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere.
A flight from NYC to Calgary, Alberta, Canada will take approximately five hours, at which time you can line dance as you experience the Canada’s country music capital, referred to as the “Nashville of the North.
A flight from NYC to Reykjavik will take approximately five and a half hours, at which time you will marvel at the natural splendor of this amazing country and most likely spot Björk in the process.
If you really have time, you can bathe in Angel Falls while line dancing with Björk, as you commiserate about the loss of the Liberace Museum, buy your tickets to your next cricket match, and get a tattoo of a sloth. Your only decision will be whether the tattoo is of the three-toed or two-toed variety.
